God’s promises incite prayer

Luke 24:49
And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
Acts 1:14
These all continued with one accord in prayer.

God’s promises are given not to restrain, but to incite to prayer. They show the direction in which we may ask, and the extent to which we may expect an answer.

They are the signed check, made payable to order, which we must indorse and present for payment.

Though the Bible be crowded with golden promises from board to board, yet will they be inoperative until we turn them into prayer.

It is not our province to argue the reasonableness of this; it is enough to accentuate and enforce it. – F.B. Meyer.

The promise of the spirit constrained the disciples to pray for it. Are we making as much as we might, of the sure things, which God has purposed shall be, as incentives to earnest, persevering prayer?

He has purposed that His gospel shall be preached throughout the world; are we praying that it may be? God’s certainties should inspire to prayer.
