Brain-Computer Interfaces Inch Closer To Mainstream – April 30, 2013

“Some crude brain-reading products already exist, letting people play easy games or move a mouse around a screen.” But the products commercially available today will soon look archaic. “To really be able to understand what is going on with the brain today you need to surgically implant an array of sensors into the brain,” said John Donoghue, a neuroscientist and director of the Brown Institute for Brain Science.

Cops Barge Into Calif. Parents’ Home, Take Their Baby – April 29, 2013

A California couple had their five-month-old baby “snatched” by police after they took the infant to get a second opinion on a medical procedure, they claim. Anna and Alex Nikolayev are described as loving parents who took their baby, who has a heart murmur, to Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento when he started exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The family has undergone plenty of doctor visits in the last five months for their son’s heart, and were unsettled by the treatment he was receiving.


Female DNA Found on Boston Bomb – April 29, 2013

Investigators have found female DNA on at least one of the bombs used in the Boston Marathon attacks, though they haven’t determined whose DNA it is or whether its presence means a woman helped the two brothers suspected in the bombings, according to U.S. officials briefed on the probe.


Taxing Internet Purchases – April 23, 2013

States have been trying to collect sales tax on Internet purchases for decades—since the beginning of Internet commerce. The holdup has been a 1992 Supreme Court ruling that states cannot require businesses in other states to collect taxes for them. Now, legislation is moving through the U.S. Senate to facilitate Internet sellers to collect sales tax and remit it to the purchaser’s state.

France Legalizes Gay Marriage – April 23, 2013

France became the 14th country in the world to allow same-sex couples to wed Tuesday, when its parliament approved a law that has sparked often violent street protests and a rise in homophobic attacks. Lawmakers in the lower house National Assembly, where President Francois Hollande’s Socialists have an absolute majority, passed the bill by 331 votes for and 225 against.
